TWO great New Year's Galas - Vienna and Venice

TWO great New Year Galas : The Neujahrskonzert live from the Wiener Philarmoniker at 1115 GMT, and the New Year's Concert live from La Fenice, Venice at 1900 GMT.  These will be broadcast all over the world.  but the links I've given are BBC TV 2 and Arte.TV.(not available in UK)   The Vienna concert is a grand tradition, a great way to celebrate, even for people who don't normally do classical. The Venice concert, featuring Italian opera repertoire is a bit more interesting in music terms.   This concert is conducted by Daniel Harding, with Nancy Agresta and Matthew Polenzani

Also available :

The Dresden Staatskapelle gala wth Thielemann, Netrebko, J D Florez and Pavol Breslik HERE. It's wonderful. very spontaneous and lively.

The Berliner Philharmoniker gala with Simon Rattle HERE

And an antidote to the brainless Vienna Staatsoper Die Fledermaus, a link to the 1943 film version, which puts the satire back into the opera. Good "Regie" deals with the meaning of an opera. Otto Schenk, is "Bad Regie" because he castrates meaning.

My own feeling is that, whatever the origins, the gala has now become a world-wide celebration uniting people everywhere who can get the broadcast. Including those the Nazis hated.

Happy New Year. Are they by any chance the same person? I think we should be told.

I caught some of the Italian concert. The ballets were cringe-making.
